Once upon a time in an ancient village
Was a young and beautiful girl
In love she was with the portrait of herself
And would dream of it all day long

And one day – it was a heavy blow –
The mirror had broken into a thousand pieces
So despaired she was that she scraped her face
And she nearly died from grief

Dark night filled up with tears and pain
All of a sudden frozen her heart became
A statue of ice and cold
A thousand ages old

And one day to the same old village
Came an understanding man
He weeped for the tears that were frozen to ice
Till freed they flew down to the ground

Having reflected the sense of love
The deep blue had come down from heaven’s door
The barrel organ played a new melody
It was heard so far and wide
